Revealing Mr. Maugham tells the story of one of literature's most influential and misunderstood gay writers, W. Somerset Maugham. A spy, playwright, physician and author of such works as Of Human Bondage, The Razor's Edge, and Cakes and Ale, Maugham not only reinvented the spy novel but also frequently embraced the taboo subjects of adultery and sexual jealousy. Although married, Maugham had numerous male lovers and engaged in a longtime relationship with Gerald Haxton, an American man who helped the more retiring Maugham meet the people who would populate Maugham's stories. While examining the writer's personal struggles, including his sexuality and a stammer that Maugham developed at age 10 after his parents' deaths, filmmaker Michael House incorporates homemade video footage, classic Hollywood film clips, and interviews with family, friends and scholars, including Aristead Maupin, Alexander McCall Smith, Pico Iyer, Alan Furst, Ronald Harwood, Selina Hastings, Nicky Haslam and many more.
